This permafrost formed during the Pleistocene glaciation (approximately 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago) and has remained frozen since because interior Alaska's climate (cold winters, warm dry summers, thin snow cover) allows the ground to freeze to great depth but does not subject it to the sustained warming that has thawed permafrost in Siberia's more humid climate zones. The result is that Pleistocene megafauna that died in or near the Tanana Valley -- horses, bison, mammoths, lions, and giant ground sloths -- were often preserved intact in the permafrost. Gold mining (placer gold mining in Fairbanks began 1902 and continues today using powerful hydraulic and mechanical sluicing equipment that thaws permafrost in large volumes) regularly exposes these specimens.
