Boston — one of America's oldest and most historically significant cities — offers the Freedom Trail, Harvard and MIT, Fenway Park (the oldest MLB stadium), world-class seafood, and fall foliage day trips. The MBTA connects Logan Airport to downtown in 20 minutes for $2.90, making Boston one of the most transit-friendly US cities.
BOS Airport has strong airline competition: JetBlue (dominant), Delta, American, United, Southwest, and Alaska all compete. FareOptic finds the lowest Boston airfare across all carriers.

From Revolutionary War history on the Freedom Trail to Fenway Park's Green Monster and Harvard's campus, Boston is one of America's most rewarding and walkable cities.
The Freedom Trail — a 2.5-mile (4-km) red-brick line through downtown Boston — connects 16 significant sites of the American Revolution: Boston Common, Massachusetts State House, Park Street Church, Granary Burying Ground (Paul Revere, Samuel Adams), King's Chapel, Benjamin Franklin's birthplace, Old Corner Bookstore, Old South Meeting House (where the Tea Party was organized), Old State House, Boston Massacre Site, Faneuil Hall, Paul Revere House, Old North Church, Copp's Hill Burial Ground, and Bunker Hill.
The Freedom Trail is self-guided (free red-line walking tour) or available with a costumed guide from the Freedom Trail Foundation ($15, 90 minutes). The North End portion — Paul Revere House through Old North Church — is the most historically intimate section; do this at 9am before tour groups arrive. The trail passes Faneuil Hall Marketplace at midday, which is crowded but has good food options
Harvard University — founded 1636, the oldest university in the Americas — occupies Harvard Square in Cambridge, directly across the Charles River from Boston (10 minutes by subway Red Line). MIT sits 2 km east of Harvard along the Charles River. Both campuses are freely walkable, and Harvard's art museums (Fogg, Busch-Reisinger, Arthur M. Sackler) are free to the public. The Harvard Natural History Museum is extraordinary.
Harvard's three art museums (Fogg, Busch-Reisinger, Arthur M. Sackler) consolidated in one building offer one of the finest art collections in New England, free to the public on select days. The Harvard Museum of Natural History's Glass Flowers (883 hand-blown glass botanical models, 1887–1936) are a unique attraction found nowhere else in the world
Fenway Park — opened April 20, 1912, the oldest Major League Baseball stadium in continuous use — is one of the great American sports experiences: the Green Monster (the left-field wall, 37 feet tall, built to prevent home run balls from landing on Lansdowne Street), the hand-operated scoreboard, and the most devoted baseball fan base in professional sports. Red Sox home games April–October are an essential Boston experience.
Green Monster seats (atop the left-field wall at Fenway) are the most sought-after in baseball — 269 seats mounted on the 37-foot wall with a unique field-level view unlike any other ballpark. Monster seats are sold via lottery and secondary market (typically $100–400+) — book weeks to months in advance. Standing room tickets are available at the box office day-of for $20–40
The Museum of Fine Arts Boston — founded 1870, reopened in a Fenway neighborhood complex — holds one of the top five art collections in the US: Egyptian artifacts (largest outside Egypt), Impressionist paintings (strongest Monet collection in the Western Hemisphere), American art (the definitive collection of Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent), Japanese and Asian art, and European masters.
The MFA's Impressionist collection — built by Boston's Brahmin families who bought directly from French dealers in the 1880s–1900s — includes 35 Monet paintings, the largest Monet collection in the Western Hemisphere outside Paris. The 'La Japonaise' (Camille Monet in Japanese Costume, 1876) is the most iconic, but the Giverny water lily series and the Rouen Cathedral paintings are equally significant
The Boston Marathon — held annually on Patriots' Day (third Monday of April), first run in 1897 — is the world's oldest annual marathon and one of the six World Marathon Majors. The 26.2-mile course from Hopkinton to Copley Square draws 500,000 spectators. Heartbreak Hill (mile 20–21 in Newton) is the most famous section. The finish line at Boylston and Dartmouth is a permanent Boston landmark.
Best spectator spots for Boston Marathon: Wellesley College (mile 13, where students scream for kisses — the 'Scream Tunnel'); Newton's Heartbreak Hill (miles 20–21); and the Boylston Street finish area (mile 26). Arrive at any spot by 9am for the elite field; the main wave passes Boylston 10:30am–noon. Kenmore Square has the best bar atmosphere for watching the finish
Boston Common (1634) is the oldest public park in the United States. Adjacent Boston Public Garden — established 1837 as the first public botanical garden in the US — is home to the Swan Boats (pedal-powered boats operating since 1877 on the lagoon), the Make Way for Ducklings sculptures (beloved 1941 Robert McCloskey picture book), and magnificent Victorian-era plantings.
Swan Boats (operating April–September in the Public Garden lagoon) are a uniquely Boston institution — $4 per ride, 12 minutes, pedaled by a college student hidden inside a giant swan. The combination of the lagoon, Victorian suspension bridge, weeping willows, and swan boats in the heart of one of America's great cities is the most quintessentially Boston experience available
JetBlue's Mint business class (BOS to LAX/SFO/LAS) offers lay-flat beds at fares often 40–60% below comparable American, Delta, or United business class. For BOS transcontinental travel, always compare JetBlue Mint against other carriers' business class fares on FareOptic.
July–August (peak summer) is Boston's most expensive travel period with hotel rates often $300–500/night near downtown. September–October offers ideal fall weather, lower airfares, and the start of Red Sox playoff season. June is warm, less crowded than July, with good airline competition. Patriots' Day weekend (April) is one of Boston's most expensive weeks (Marathon).
Providence T.F. Green Airport (PVD, 80 km south — 1 hour by car) and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT, 80 km north — 1 hour) have Southwest and budget carriers with lower fares on some routes. For trips where Logan price is high, compare PVD or MHT on FareOptic — the drive or bus may be worth the savings.
The Silver Line (Bus Rapid Transit) connects Logan Airport terminals to South Station in 20 minutes for $2.90 — one of the best transit airport connections in the US. The Red, Green, Blue, and Orange subway lines serve most Boston neighborhoods. No Uber or taxi is necessary from Logan to most Boston destinations.
